Bookmaking (for the Bookmaking Challenged)

I am not a bookmaker in the traditional sense. I don’t like the precise measuring and fussy attention to detail to create that ‘perfect’ look. I DO love to use unusual materials like CD cases, old book covers, heavy watercolor paper, and unstretched artist canvas to create unique, textured journal covers. You’ll learn some luscious texture and painting techniques that make each cover distinctive. Various simple binding techniques will also be covered. (Remember: bookmaking for the bookmaking challenged). This is a process and project-oriented class. You may end up with a plethora (love that word!) of unique journals by the end of our time together.

Love Symbols Journaling

In Love Symbols we are going to learn about four powerful ancient symbols and their deep meaning both historically and in recent times. Galia Alena
I am a visual poet, earth mystic and mist walker. I walk in beauty dreaming with the divine to create sacred art and to partner with intuitive healing practices. I create in dialogue with the sacred feminine and my practice involves listening to the magic as it appears in dreams, journey, tarot, nature and other daily blessings. I’m a beauty unveiler, light huntress, moment caresser, mythologist, archetype weaver and visionary poetess. Ultimately, all of my work is about helping people peel back the layers to experience the intense beauty of each moment allowing them access to both their intuitive wisdom and a deeper connection to spirit and self, helping them find their own truths in connected stillness. In this way I am a guidess helping others find their own mystery school of wisdom and sacred being.
(Because the beauty of this life cracks our hearts open and it is through the cracks that light can flow both in and out and connect us back to our divine selves).
Oh... and I believe in the magic of this life.
I live in the insanely beautiful Blue Mountains, just shy of Sydney, amoung the clouds and mist, with my family, our kitten and all the winged ones who frequent our garden. Each day here is a wondrous delight of tiny miracles through either the glorious light or magical mists.

Wendy Brightbill
I deeply believe that you paint what you need the most in your life. I consider myself a story teller; only I use color instead of words, and brushstrokes instead of sentences. I believe you can create the life you want and change your story. For me that meant painting the color and joy back into my life after a car accident. It took a brain injury for me to pick up a paint brush, and I am so glad that I did. I am ever grateful for what a car accident brought into my life and this beautiful creative journey I am on.
I have been painting for over a decade now. I teach online art classes and share my passion for paint pushing with other people. It never gets old!
I have been married to my husband for 20 some years now. He has been my biggest cheerleader through all of this, and strongly discouraged me from becoming a medical transcriptionist. Could you even imagine? Together we are raising three remarkably kind and brilliant girls in the glory of the Colorado mountains.
Veronica Schauder
Hi Fellow Creators!
I am Veronica. Mood-bending feelings whisperer, fun loving seeker of knowledge, educational advocate, champion of heart felt healing, trusted keeper of secret wishes, Sunday binge artist and an enthusiastic voice for the right brain revolution.
By day, I help tender hearts heal as a School Social Worker. I feel blessed to serve my school community for over 25 years and counting. I’m lucky to have a front row seat to the inner world of a child’s heart; filled with joy, enlightenment, sorrows and stories.
I found my way back to my painting roots with SoulCollage®, an intuitive collage process. This magical journey taught me to let go of attachments to outcome and trust my creative wisdom. I am proud to be a SoulCollage® guide on the side, facilitating workshops for self-discovery.
On Sundays, I binge create. I love mixed media, online art classes and Instagram. I recently traveled to Germany to facilitate a workshop, hosted by an Instagram friend I met in an online class. A class that taught me how to create my own hand-painted Oracle Deck.
Creating connections drives me. My heart is filled with gratitude and excitement to have the opportunity to connect with you!
Traycee Alane
I was inspired to create at an early age by my Granny’s love for creating ceramics and painting. I’ve dabbled in different types of creative outlets over the years, from running a small custom cake and cookie business, to jewelry making, sketching, and many things in between. Eventually, I discovered art journaling which served as a stepping stone to creating work on a larger scale. Soon I moved into abstract work. It was then that I found a world of mysterious creatures living in paint marks and splatters. My work is influenced by the beauty and wonder that is waiting to be discovered in nature and within us.
I approach each piece with curiosity and imagination while trying to tap into my inner child. My paintings start as pure play as I add paint, marks, words, symbols, and sometimes collage to the substrate. I continue to explore while observing and listening to what is emerging. When I see an image hidden among the marks, I’ll work to bring it forward so that the subject takes on a life in the painting. Often there is a message or a memory that the final painting will reveal to me. I am intrigued when the image delivers personal meaning to the viewer or they see something that I didn’t see. My hope is that you see something in my work that speaks directly to you.
Sabra Issa
I’m Sabra, a self-taught artist from the Netherlands. I’ve been a freelance programmer and UX designer for many years. As most of us do, I tried very hard to balance my need for art and music with work, deadlines and clients. The result was that I failed at both and ended up at a point in my life where very little was not a drain on my energy reserves.
Last year I took the first steps to become an artist and teacher. I joined several collaborative courses and released my first solo course. The warmth and love with which that was received by the art community was so intense, it actually took me by surprise and a while to get used to. It’s funny (or not) how many of us are used to being unappreciated for the work we do. It’s growing on me fast though, so please don’t stop. ;)
I genuinely believe that observing the world and the people around us, the way we do when we create art, changes how we perceive both that world and ourselves. Art and the unique connection it creates between people is unlike any I’ve seen before. I love this online community so much and can honestly say it has changed my life.
Robin Mead
I am an independent, self -representing artist whose works include Colorful Art, Whimsical Digital Creations and Altered Art. I love to experiment with Mixed Media And Bold Watercolors while creating Landscapes and Gardens with Line Designs. I love to design colorful depictions of nature, preferably the ocean, landscapes, flowers and birds, while relying on intuition and insight to capture that 'joy' in bold color. The ultimate expression is to translate my love of color onto paper, canvas and the digital screen. I also love to spend time creating Colorful Crochet Afghans and Handmade Art Journals that infuse my Love of Color with joyful tactile fiber pieces that can be used in the home or given as gifts.
My background in the Social Work profession has helped me to identify and appreciate the small beauties in life, and to express the Joy that comes with creating. There are so many concepts, theories, values and practices Ive learned through being a social worker, but the most profound is that every one of us has the ability to change our lives, alter our futures and transform ourselves..and that power lies deep within each of us. It does not come from a book, a guru, a teacher or a class, but through the lessons these options offer, when applied with our own lens of thoughts, feelings and behaviors.
I love to spend time at the ocean or in nature looking for inspiration, and always have a bag of art supplies ready in hand.. I live with my husband Wilson of 32 years 2 daughters Victoria and Rachel, grandson Fonze and friends enjoying our time in the deep south. My work can be found in homes around the world as well as album covers, books, and in tutorials for creating art.

Pia Rom
I am a creative soul and was born and live in Germany. Around ten years ago I started to Art Journal every day. …I am a so called self-taught artist if you will.
Very quick I fell in love with painting faces, so I practise them regularly. But instead of studying the „Realism-Style“ I felt more satisfaction by letting them be kinda raw and undefined . I love to try out new artmaterials and techniques, and use a lot of collage to keep my art fresh and interesting.
Colourful, bold and full of story, that’s how I love to paint.
The dance between my collage work and my imagination thrills me every day anew – and yes Art Journaling is my passion!
Michelle Mann
I live in the beautiful Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. It has been my home all my life although I have travelled to many destinations in the world, I still find I love to come home to such paradise.
I love colour, mixed media and travel. In my art practice I love the feeling of immersing myself in the creative process, getting lost in time where everything drops away. It takes me to a place I’ve never been before and it helps me get out of my head, to let go and have fun and this is what I teach you to do.
My art interests are varied and I have many mediums from fabric, mixed media, and abstract to fine art and illustration. One of my biggest projects was creating the Gold Lotus Oracle deck where I painted all images for my deck and wrote a book that accompanies the deck. The oracle is used for guidance and self-growth. It comes from my many years as a psychic medium and teacher.
My love of travel has taken me to many wonderful destinations in the world. I make a travel journal a few months before I leave and I use many different textured papers, found objects and charms to decorate it to use while away to draw and write into. When I return I complete pages that I didn’t finish and add more drawings and trinkets I gather on the trip. I find these journals so fulfilling. They are a visual account of my journey and my thoughts and are an inspiration for my art when I get home. My next adventure is to host a retreat in Vietnam in 2021. If you would like to be part of this adventure please get in touch.

I am drawn to forests, plants and creatures, with a fairytale twist. I work part time as a primary school art teacher and the other half of my time is spent creating artwork for exhibitions and sales, teaching in person adult classes on gelatin monoprinting and also teaching in online classes, both as a guest teacher and in my own solo classes. I can't wait to see you all in class!

Lora earned honours degrees in both History of European Painting and Archaeology before going on to train as an oil painter, in a traditional Atelier in Florence, Italy. The discovery of Encaustic changed her life and she now works primarily in Encaustic and mixed media . As she says, "once I tried Encaustic , I was totally hooked and I have been fortunate to be able to apply my traditional knowledge of painting to the encaustic medium and I found along the way that I just love teaching.
I am so inspired by watching all of my students gain so much confidence and reach new levels with their work ..Even those with no experience of either Encaustic or Portraiture can do amazing work " After living and painting all over the world , Lora moved back to her Irish roots in 2018, and created a vibrant and hugely popular Art school in the West of Ireland, Essence of Mulranny (EOM) Studios at Mulranny Co Mayo where she welcomes visiting teachers and students from many countries. She has a special love for animals and has traveled to many of the wild places of the world to see the incredible diversity of animals in the wild. At the same time, she has enjoyed meeting people and learning about different cultures across the globe.
In a time of extreme divides, Jennifer’s work strives to celebrate the beauty found in each person's uniqueness and the many things we share in common. She’s inspired by the people and animals who share our world, especially those enhancing our lives on a daily basis. If her work brings you joy, she will have achieved one of her creative goals.
Jennifer is currently inspired by Bubba, her 16 year old black cat; Scarlett O’Hairy, her cream colored golden retriever; and Albus Dumbledog, her rescued labradoodle.
Amanda Grace
Amanda Grace is an Irish Visual Journal Artist, spiritual guide and facilitator of creative
recovering & wisdom.
Amanda’s work is centred around helping you experience the creative process as a means through which to inquire into your sense of self and how that self is expressed, in service of living an authentic and triumphant life. Amanda believes that the deeper our understanding of, connection to and care for the self, the greater our ability to surrender that which impedes us from showing up and accepting with kindness and grace, the truth of who we really are.
Fonda Clark Haight
Fonda Clark Haight is a mixed media, intuitive artist living in the mountains of NC. Looking past the obvious, close observation and engagement of my truth is the process. The challenge is to see beyond the distractions of the conspicuous to engage with my feelings deep in the subconscious. My goal is to inspire those who see my work to look more carefully at the world around them, to discover beauty in unusual places, and to question the truth in themselves.
Erin DeCoste
Erin DeCoste is a self taught, award winning, mixed media artist specializing in portraits. Her affinity to capture emotions within the human face has launched her on a journey of self expression and personal growth that she enjoys sharing with others. Donna Jean Engstrom
Donna is a mixed media artist living in Michigan. She weaves a visual history by creating a rich multi-layered surface. Color and texture are integral components of her work; the perfect combination to provide a mysterious and intriguing surface that engages the viewer.
Words are especially inspiring to Donna and much of her work is inspired by book passages, quotes, and poetry. She enjoys working in a series to communicate and explore a concept in a variety of ways.
Dana Bloede
My mixed media portraits draw from my Native American and Mexican ancestry. Captivated by forests, most of my paintings have a serene narrative with a soulful message. Each painting tells an untold story about women in a way that words cannot. You may see yourself in my paintings. They are meant to evoke feelings of peacefulness, warmth and trust. Other times they are meant to show an open, vulnerable heart. My paintings are intentionally aged and distressed to obtain an old world charm. When I'm not painting, I am passionate about facilitating fun, creative and educational art workshops. I live in an urban village, Forest Park, which is just outside of Chicago, Illinois USA, with my husband, teenage son & 2 Cockapoo dogs!

Aimee Bishop
I am a gatherer. A creative. A lover. A beauty seeker. I think the act of expressing ourselves through making is one of the most powerful and important parts of being human. Art making is healing, grounding and expanding. It builds connection and truth. Let’s explore together this most beautiful gift.
Ildiko Karsay
I'm Ildikó Karsay, living in the centre of Europe in Hungary, in the beautiful ancient capitol of Budapest.
I feel at home in acryl, watercolour, silk and oil too. Love to explore and try new medium, materials and supplies
I’m a floralist in aquarelle on paper. I love NATURE with the never ending inspirations.
I’m an explorer working with oil on gesso board.
I create abstract paintings with acrylics on canvas inspired by love and nature that bring beauty, warmth, and joy to my heart.
I believe everybody is creative, just need a little help to remember . .
But mainly I'm a Mom of 3 brilliant children, Gege a boy age 20, girls are Lucy age 16 and Panni 14. They are very talented with their hands too. With 3 children I always find some interesting "craft" to do with them and with other children. In summers I hold art camps for children. I love their evolving hands and heart.
I'm making art since my childhood and love to create and help people in person to find their inner voice. I'm an explorer, always seeking for new mediums and materials.
Loving creativity comes from my childhood I was curious and tried everything I met.
Bateman Steris
Crawford, TN, USA is my chosen home now, although I have lived all over the USA. I’m an abstract mixed media artist working on paper and canvas. I paint in layers, usually starting with free gestural marks and smears of color. I might then begin to add some sort of structure and choose a focal point. Sometimes this early form holds true to the end, sometimes things change drastically as my creative intuition calls the shots. My work is always an expression of my subconscious and my desire to work through life experiences. I am particularly interested in the relationship of light and dark, layers of meaning, tensions of interconnection, mystery and ambiguity.
I earned a BFA from the University of Wisconsin and later did graduate work in art at Arizona State University. I showed and sold in Scottsdale, AZ and New Hampshire. After taking some time to earn an MS in Mental Health Counseling, I have returned to my creative roots here in Tennessee, where I am beginning to show locally and online.
Kimberly Santini
Michigan painter Kimberly Kelly Santini was born an artist, but took a bit of time figuring it out. She tried on many other hats, but her desire to create ultimately persevered. She has a BFA in painting and a BA in art history, an extensive professional background in many different art arenas and some odder life experiences (like writing automobile owners manuals). Her work is widely and enthusiastically welcomed, sitting in corporate collections and homes around the world, and has been honored with a variety of awards (Santini was the official artist of the 2015 Kentucky Derby).
Santini is a contemporary painter completely enamored with her materials and the trace of the artists’ hand. Line, form and the properties of paint drive compositions where drawing and arbitrary color create intriguing passages. Layered marks build a dream-like scape, yet it all is rooted in a representational and impressionistic base.
A daily painter (she created the wildly popular www.PaintingaDogaDay.com), Santini continually creates unapologetically beautiful imagery. Her ongoing paintings address the complexities of the human experience, building connections between possibility, intentions, and the trace of our actions. Symbols, shapes and lines weave the stories, with the viewer’s job being to discover and tell them.
Santini has gallery representation in the Hudson River Valley of New York and in New Orleans, Baltimore, Columbus and the Detroit area. She paints, blogs and shares her work via social media, runs a local art journaling group and teaches multi-day painting workshops. She also works with a handful of private students, both children and adult. Inquiries are always welcome.

Emma Petitt
I am a Brit living in Rural Southern Spain with my Partner Paul, 2 dogs, 15 chickens and 7 ducks!
I have only been painting for 3 years, having not picked up a paintbrush or done anything remotely creative for over 25 years. Our move to Spain triggered something in my brain, I wanted to give up my stressful job in the UK, find a freer, simpler life and become an Artist...so here I am!
I paint faces, mainly women, I love colour, pattern and texture. I often build up layers of colour and scrape it away again to reveal hints of what lies beneath. I love that faces can reveal and hide memories, emotions and thoughts in equal measure. My work also shows womens’ fragility, soul, strength and sisterhood in equal measure too. We are Tribe.
Kimberly Heil
I am a creative explorer, an intuitive artist, a seeker of awe, a
nature lover, a believer in magic, a wisdom-keeper, a storyteller, a
self-published author and illustrator of award winning children’s
books. I am a creator and I love it!
As a warrior for sacred expression and a space holder for deep personal work, I guide individuals to find healing through rediscovering their creativity and authentic voice through the art process. I believe art has the ability to heal, to provide insights,
and to resolve internal conflicts. To me, creating art is a sacred act as it allows one to recreate the deepest parts of themselves over and over again as they grow, change, and evolve. The good, the bad, and the messy are all embraced without judgement. The process of creating art becomes the journey to igniting your sacred truth.
I invite you to embrace your own magnificent uniqueness, just as you are, right here, right now as we dive into this creative adventure together! Let the magic begin.

Who can sign up for this course?
All creative souls, that is everyone!! Whether beginner or more experience,
I’ve never done any art or anything like this before, can I still sign up?
Perfect, what a wonderful way to start.
What sort of supplies do I need to do this course?
There is a supply list here, however they are just suggestions- for many of the lessons you will be able to use what you have at hand. There is usually no need to go out and buy more.
Internet connection- you will need enough to be able to watch the videos and participate.
I’m not on Facebook, can I still do the class?
You don’t need to be on Facebook to do the class, you can just work from the classroom if you like. I resisted signing up for Facebook for a long time and I am so glad that I finally did- the benefits of being in community with so many like minded people who are willing to share far out weighs any reservations I had. If you are on facebook and you join the group, we will all benefit from the shared experiences, lessons and inspirations, including me (I can’t wait to be inspired by you all). It is totally your choice how you want to do this workshop.
Can I share the class with others?
We would absolutely love it if you told others about this workshop, especially the free weekend (send them to the sign up page for their own Weekend Access Pass) however all the teachers are sharing much of their hearts and talent into this project and class and we would really appreciate it if you didn’t share the actual classes with anyone who hasn’t signed up for them. It is both good Karma and good manners :)
Can I share what I do in the course?
Absolutely, of course, we would love a mention (as an honouring of the teacher who inspired you) and a link back and there is a button you can pop up on your blog if you would like (I would be so grateful). & we would so love to see what you create in the Facebook group.
How long will the Make Create Express Workshop go for ?
The Make Create Express workshop will run for 12 months with a new lesson each week and lifetime access.
How long will I have access to the workshop?
You will have access to the classroom for life time so that you have plenty of time to work through the material and return to the material as needed. If you have the Vimeo app you will be able to watch the videos off line as well. The Facebook group will stay open so that the community there can continue to inspire each other and share knowledge :)
Once I sign up for the course can I change my mind?
Sorry, but all sales are final due to the digital nature of this workshop- once you have signed up there are no refunds for this course.
