Unbound a Sampler of Marks And Remembering

In this workshop we will be remembering our own unique creative expression through the act of building layers, mark making, free form hand stitching, quick emotive sketches and much more! I will guide you through a process of playful discovery using a few fun and easy to find art materials. I have found such freedom and expansion working this way I want to share it with you! Our project will be a Sampler of sorts, a stitched, marked and layered mixed media piece that will remind you to let go, be brave and always explore. Bound a Book of Remembering

We will continue to develop our sampler with additional layering and mark making techniques, reinventing and reconstructing into a small art book. My deepest work always seems to find it’s place in the safety of books. An intimate place just for me.
By stepping back and reinventing I hope to share with you how I delve into self discovery by letting go and going deep into myself. Being an observer of the process and open to any outcome leads us to making true and personal art that speaks from our soul. That’s my love and intention for you.

Mixed media surface play

Mixed media can encompass a wide range of mediums and supplies. In this lesson we explore the different techniques used in layering. Building up the layers to give depth, than adding colour to enhance the visual play. In the layers I will show you how to use stencils, papers and ephemera, pencils,mark making and other tools to give your piece a unique look that reflects your style. You can use these techniques to complete your canvas or watercolour paper. Building on these techniques learnt in the next lesson – Introduction to Whimsical colourful portraits.
Introduction to whimsical colourful portraits

This is a fun workshop to give you skills to create a basic face and use a rainbow of colour to enhance a whimsical look. This workshop will give you a different way of looking at the human or non-human face as we explore the fantasy realm. Drawing and painting faces can be daunting for some and I have created an easy guide to help you if you would like to learn.
You do not need experience to participate in this class but some drawing skill would be great plus a sense of fun and playfulness is perfect.
Chunky Junky Glue

I am going to show how I make my Chunky Junky Glue book using pieces of art and scrap pieces including cut up art, palette papers and pretty pieces of leftover scrapbook pages. This is a fun and very satisfying project bc when your book is dry and you hold it in your hands, it feels so chunky and wonderful and looks amazing❤️
Abstract mini canvases

In this lesson I will show how I create colorful mini abstracts canvases that are simple but bold.These look awesome alone on a shelf, or grouped together on a wall. They are very easy to create and have a glorious stained glass effect. You can make the designs as simple or as intricate as you would like. They require only a small amount of supplies and usually things that you already have on hand. This is a fun lesson that will encourage bright happy colors, bold lines and letting go of perfection.

We will create a portrait using limited materials that most of us have in our stash. I’ll show you some technique to add more texture and dynamic to your work. This is a great way to work when you have limited time or are looking to work a little faster.

Butterfly

Butterflies represent change and transcendence, and can be meditative to paint. This lesson will embrace these qualities through a basic rotation of simple tools – pencils and paint – and, working in layers, we will build imagery that is imbued with the nature, symbolic and literal, of butterflies.
Multiplying Like Rabbits

Taking contour drawing to an extreme, we will explore the ideas of positive and negative space, shape vs line, and local color vs joyful patterning. Together we will create a retinue of collage materials on transparent surfaces, and play with a variety of compositions and design possibilities. Students may end up with one - or many! - mixed media pieces packed with delight, along with a wealth of inspiration to carry into their next project.

From Pieces to Life

Working the lights and shadows of a face allow us to create both depth and drama. Using just a Stabilo All and a single skin toned craft paint, we will bring a face to life on a journal page. I will show you how to choose the right craft paint color for your portrait along with easy blending techniques. We will finish off our page with some fun collage elements and colors to really make our portrait pop.
Paint and Sensibilities

We’re going to paint an expressive portrait onto a circular wooden board. I will show you a few ways to transfer your portrait to the board. We will use acrylic paints layered with soft pastels to give our portrait a dreamy glow and a realistic feel. I’ll show you my favorite pastels and a few ways to use soft pastels within your portrait work. We’ll also cover tips on how to draw your viewers into your artwork and really feel the emotions of your portrait.
Patchwork Pets

It all started with the Patchwork Puppy, a lovable dog looking for his new home, and the patchwork series was born. Using the inspiration photo of a cute corgi, or even better, a photo of your favorite furry family member, create a loose and colorful painting you are sure to treasure. Let’s play with drawing out our pets and then tell their stories with a variety of patterns we’ll use to make them unique. These techniques fit well into any painting practice and Jennifer is excited to share her process with students from start to finish. Let’s celebrate the pets that rescue us!
Critter Play

Let’s play! We’ll begin with several different techniques to create loose and colorful backgrounds that will give rise to unique critters and characters. Many of Jennifer’s fun and colorful paintings come to life this way. It’s amazing how different personalities will develop as we add contrast, details and colors. Jennifer’s goals include sharing techniques that allow each artist, from beginners to advanced, to utilize these techniques in creating unique paintings. Warning: Once you start seeing critters in paintings, you’ll begin seeing them in textures on the wall, stains on the carpet and everywhere there are marks and shapes.

I have always been drawn to painting and sketching flowers in my work. I think because flowers represent the healing power of beauty in our lives. I believe that we need beauty and art, now even more than ever! In this lesson, I will demonstrate my process for creating a mixed media abstract floral painting. Altered Book Class

I am often inspired by the history found in the pages of old books. There is a texture and a beauty that can’t be duplicated. I think that this backdrop is the perfect place to begin painting. In this lesson, we will dive into creating an altered book. We will take an old book and turn it into a beautiful art journal. I will share how to prep your pages and the cover for painting. I will walk you through my signature way to paint the cover. I will finish by painting some pages inside of the altered book.

techniques and approaches in Encaustic and Mixed media, Portraiture and Figurative art. With collage I will show you how to create rich and expressive surface designs and make original pieces done with a combination of encaustic painting and mixed media techniques.
Some different demonstrations will be done, providing an extensive array of visually-stimulating possibilities for artists to explore. Bookmaking (for the Bookmaking Challenged)

I am not a bookmaker in the traditional sense. I don’t like the precise measuring and fussy attention to detail to create that ‘perfect’ look. I DO love to use unusual materials like CD cases, old book covers, heavy watercolor paper, and unstretched artist canvas to create unique, textured journal covers. You’ll learn some luscious texture and painting techniques that make each cover distinctive. Various simple binding techniques will also be covered. (Remember: bookmaking for the bookmaking challenged). This is a process and project-oriented class. You may end up with a plethora (love that word!) of unique journals by the end of our time together.

Having love in our life seems like it should be a simple thing but sometimes we need to focus on the type of love we want so it will manifest itself properly. In Love Symbols we are going to learn about four powerful ancient symbols and their deep meaning both historically and in recent times. We will then use this knowledge to create a journal spread to manifest our love goals and focus on what is truly important to us. Started out by loving a photo of a woman in a magazine we will transfer it and by this way we allow all the layers we created to this point showing through to give her more magic. We create contrast, play with colors and paint over the collage to bring her to life.. In the end the moon and the stars shines on her brave soul and lighten up our spirits.
